Long Beach undergoes a complete metamorphosis every April when the Grand Prix rolls in. Streets that usually carry daily traffic turn into a temporary circuit lined with fencing, grandstands, and nonstop activity. While the waterfront fills with fans and paddocks, the 51st running of the Acura Grand Prix proved to be a massive fixture for the city. Over 195,000 fans were on the streets across the three-day weekend, and the reach extended to a national audience as the telecast on FOX drew over 1.2 million viewers. Ratings jumped 130 percent from the previous year, marking the most-watched Long Beach race in nearly 20 years.<\/p>\n

The energy began building well before the main event on Sunday. From Larry Chen\u2019s Type S event leading into Formula Drift the weekend prior to the Racer Creator Summit, a steady stream of activity set the stage before IndyCar even rolled in. We skipped the first wave of fans at what has become known as Free Friday, missing Lupe Fiasco at the Terrace Theater Plaza, but the momentum on the streets was palpable. Fifty-one editions in, the history shows up in the families who make the trip every year and in a schedule that runs like everyone involved has done this before. Racing, car culture, and concerts share the same streets and the same crowd, creating a unique intersection of world-class racing and the Southern California lifestyle.<\/p>\n

A Sea of Orange and Saturday’s Spectacle<\/h3>\n

Before hitting the track for practice and qualifying on Saturday, we walked the fan zone to get a feel for the environment and the crowd. While driver appearances and interactive displays in the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center kept people busy, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and Porsche Carrera Cup paddocks offered a level of access that put fans directly next to the cars and crews. Walkways stayed packed with a cross-section of fans, ranging from local gearheads to international travelers drawn by the street race atmosphere. Most people we spoke with treated the weekend as a regular tradition rather than a one-time visit.<\/p>\n

One fan told us, “We have been coming to the Long Beach Grand Prix for 10 years straight\u2026 it\u2019s a family event.” That energy carried through the afternoon as Acura finally broke its home-race win drought. Nick Yelloly and Renger van der Zande took the No. 93 Meyer Shank Racing Acura to the top step of the podium in the 100-minute IMSA sprint, holding off a charging Cadillac in the final minutes. After the racing concluded, the Super Drift Challenge took over the street course, followed by the Kings of Chaos rock supergroup headlining the outdoor stage.<\/p>\n

Curated Culture at Mornings CARnival<\/h3>\n

Sunday morning kicked off with a parade down Shoreline Drive as part of the official race day ceremonies, which served as a rolling entry for the Mornings CARnival display outside Turn 9. Produced by Morning Car Club, the activation brought some of SoCal’s finest car culture directly onto the track before the cars parked to form a lineup of widebody builds, vintage exotics, and custom one-offs. Fans had a chance to see the cars in motion on the actual circuit before walking the rows of the display later in the morning.<\/p>\n

Morning Car Club has come a long way since its early days at Mornings Coffee in Frogtown, evolving from a local LA River meet into a featured part of the Grand Prix weekend. Aldo Lihiang, the visionary behind the Mornings events, put it plainly by saying, \u201cMornings has always been about curating an experience, not just a car meet.\u201d Positioned near the final hairpins, the display drew a steady crowd of fans who moved between the cars and the grandstands until the IndyCar engines fired up for the afternoon.<\/p>\n

Paddock Access and the Final Grid Walk<\/h3>\n

The fan experience at Long Beach is built on access. In the IndyCar paddock, crowds stayed thick between sessions as people moved among the cars and crews, providing a perspective a grandstand seat can’t match. Everywhere we looked, we saw a sea of orange from McLaren fans who were out in droves, though no motorsports race would be complete without some NASCAR gear in the mix. We spotted at least a dozen fans in NASCAR merch, showing just how broad the crowd remains for the weekend.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the green flag, the grid filled fast with fans, media, and teams pressing in from every direction. A wave of people suddenly started moving with purpose, and the reason became clear once Zak Brown came into view. The McLaren boss was immediately surrounded by the same orange wave that had been building since Friday. Nearby, Josef Newgarden and Scott McLaughlin moved through their final preparations while Flavor Flav worked the grid, drawing laughs and stopping for photos all the way down the line. Before the driver introductions even began, the grid was tight and loud, with everyone waiting for the same moment.<\/p>\n

Pit Lane Strategy Decides the Winner<\/h3>\n

On track, Alex Palou took the win after the final pit cycle reshuffled the order. Felix Rosenqvist controlled much of the race and led 51 of 90 laps before the last round of stops changed the picture. Palou’s crew executed a 7.3 second stop when it mattered most, edging Rosenqvist’s 8.4 second sequence and allowing Palou to emerge from the pits with 32 laps left and clean track ahead.He held the lead to the finish ahead of Rosenqvist in second and Scott Dixon in third, securing a one-three result for Chip Ganassi Racing and a 1-2-3-4 sweep for Honda and Acura with Kyle Kirkwood in fourth.<\/p>\n

Palou said, “Super proud of everybody’s job, but especially these guys, these crew that gave me the win today. It was that pit stop, with all the pressure, that these boys were able to execute perfectly.” Rosenqvist acknowledged where the race slipped away, saying, “We lost a little bit in the stop. Alex is obviously going to be 10 out of 10 almost every stop.” Dixon offered the broader view by saying, “Congrats to Alex obviously. Feel a little bit sad for Felix because I think he controlled most of the race.”<\/p>\n

Fifty-one years in, the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach has not lost its edge. Racing is the headline, but the concerts, paddock access, fan zones, and automotive culture around it are why people keep coming back year after year. Perfect weather and a tight finish capped off a weekend that saw the Southern California lifestyle take over the streets. While the names and numbers on the leaderboard change, the atmosphere of the Grand Prix remains consistent.<\/p>\n
